Snugged into a small storefront on a Davis block laden with interesting little restaurants, 2K Thai Food is a great dining destination. With its sleek, roasted pumpkin-colored walls, dark wood chairs and black marble tables, the dimly lit space feels like an exotic cave. Big framed pictures of fantastical Thai maidens wrestling with serpent-like creatures add a bit of fun and color to the ambience, and the constantly-smiling waitstaff—outfitted in all black, with white ties—make you feel cheerily welcome. Dive into 2K’s menu and you’re guaranteed to find something yummy: We highly recommend the kitchen’s excellent soups, which are super-flavorful and very comforting—try the ravishingly fragrant poe taek, crammed with a tangle of seafood in a bracing hot and sour broth with ginger, galangal, lemon grass and kaffir leaves. There’s an enticing appetizer selection, from the deep-fried sweet corn cakes (served with sweet and sour sauce) and vegetarian spring rolls to the “angel wings,” boneless chicken wings stuffed with ground pork and silver noodles. Squid lovers should indulge in the yum pla-muek, a broiled squid salad seasoned with a citrusy bite of lime and tossed with cilantro and green onion. The noodle and curry dishes are also very popular, as are the a la carte items such as the pad kra-pao ped, duck quick-sauteed with green beans, carrot strips, bell peppers and zucchini. And if you think the restaurant’s name is referring to the millennium, it’s not—the two K’s refer to the two owners’ first names, which both start with “K.” — Kira O'Donnell
