The Dollar-Wise Gourmet: Sweet Sunday Suppers

So you think you can’t afford to dine at the region’s finer restaurants? Try this: Sunday Supper. It’s a trend recently brought to my attention by Molly Hawks, executive chef and co-owner of Hawks Restaurant in Granite Bay, where four-course Sunday Suppers cost $35. Sunday fare is typically a “little more playful” (i.e., casual) than Hawks’ regular menu, she says, with buttermilk fried chicken a staple on the last Sunday of every month. “It’s just like eating at home, minus the cleanup,” says Hawks, adding that the food is served family-style, and you can bring the kids for $15 apiece. Can’t make it on a Sunday? No worries: Many local restaurants offer prix-fixe deals on other days of the week, including Mulvaney’s Building & Loan (monthly four-course “family dinner” for $35), Selland’s Market-Cafe ($25 dinners for two Monday through Saturday) and Biba (three courses for $30 Monday through Friday).
     Here’s a peek at a few Sunday Supper deals around town.

 

Hawks Restaurant

Sample menu: Pork scaloppine with prosciutto and sage, sautéed Bloomsdale spinach, Little Gem lettuces with roasted garlic vinaigrette and shaved Parmesan, strawberry Linzer tart with vanilla bean gelato

Also noted: Hawks is all about seasonal cuisine, so the menu is ever changing (except for the fried chicken, that is).
 

Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op

Sample menu: Grilled citrus marinated chicken breast, fava and white bean salad, spinach salad with strawberry vinaigrette, spiced millet with grilled vegetables, blueberry crème brûlée

Also noted: Organic produce from Soil Born is the star of this family-style meal prepared by the farm’s Dominic Mogavero; vegetarian option available.
 

Paul Martin’s American Bistro

Sample menu: The Sunday special is always the same: prime rib, mashed potatoes, soup or salad and choice of dessert (strawberry shortcake, Meyer lemon crème brûlée and banana cream pie, to name a few)
