806 L St.
Opened in 1939, this is downtown Sacramento’s oldest restaurant, and it’s still run by the descendants of gregarious and talented Frank Fat. A longtime favorite of the Capitol crowd, Fat’s is always packed at lunch, and it seems every well-heeled patron is talking business of one kind or another. Don’t miss the pot stickers, which are plump, meaty and grilled to produce a crispy, delicious exterior. The restaurant is well known for its steaks—especially Frank’s Style New York Steak, piled high with softly sautéed onions—and its brandy-fried chicken, redolent of ginger and garlic. This is Chinese cuisine at its most sophisticated and elegant.
