Fans of the Chavez Plaza farmers’ market, open from May through October, are arriving in hoards to purchase some of the region’s ripest and freshest produce. Beloved by downtown lunch-goers, the Chavez market also offers an array of food trucks for visitors, who have an opportunity to chow down on dishes ranging from carnitas tacos and Indian curries to artisan popsicles before stocking up on a selection of fruits and vegetables. Last week the stands were crammed with gorgeous fresh cherries, strawberries, asparagus and early apricots and peaches—a festive celebration of Sacramento spring. While shopping I ran into chef Oliver Ridgeway of Grange Restaurant & Bar, who was piling an assortment of produce on a large rolling cart to be used in his farm-to-fork menu items. If you want to experience a local foodie institution, stop by this colorful market—it’s open 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Chavez Plaza, 10th and J streets in downtown Sacramento.
