The Tour de France is one of summer’s great sporting spectacles, so we thought it only fitting to pay homage to the event with our own (very modest) two-wheel expedition. Unlike the elite cycling event, however, this leisurely pub ride is all about soaking up the sights and the suds along the way. To that end, we mapped out a pedal-friendly midtown loop where the patios are urban oases and the peoplewatching doesn’t disappoint.
STAGE 1: Rubicon Brewing Company
2004 Capitol Ave.
With 25 years in the business, this venerable watering hole has got to be doing something right. Quality beer and pub grub in a low-key, come-as-you-are atmosphere.
STAGE 2: Bows & Arrows
1815 19th St.
Arguably the hippest patio spot in town. The abbreviated beer and wine lists are an appealing triumph of quality over quantity. Superb sammies, too.
STAGE 3: Magpie Cafe
1409 R St.
Front-row views of the animated sidewalk scene (if you can snag a coveted seat outdoors) and a smartly curated selection of brews conspire to make Magpie a don’t-miss destination on your Tour de Sac.
STAGE 4: Firestone Public House
1132 16th St.
The new sports-themed pub has 60 beers on tap and enough big-screen TVs that one of them is bound to be tuned to Tour coverage.
