“I do about 10 to 12 knee replacements a week. The clues to becoming a better doctor are in the patients who don’t do as well after surgery as they and I had hoped. Because surgery is both science and art, the results are unfortunately not always perfect. When you look at any orthopedic surgery and it’s not 100 percent, the question is, ‘Why?’ My goal is to continually strive to improve my understanding in order to better satisfy my patients. I also do research at UC Davis, which has helped me to become a better doctor, too. A lot of the experiments we do in the lab are designed to answer questions that come up in the operating room or during the patient’s recovery. Being an orthopedic surgeon is both a curse and a blessing. Unlike many other medical specialties, in orthopedic surgery you either help the patient or you don’t. Your goal is to improve their function and try to make the patient do something better than they could do before the surgery. The curse is when things don’t go well, and you know what you didn’t do. You have to constantly remind yourself that your goal is to continually increase your understanding.”
