The doctors of the Gold Rush Era worked exhaustively to not only take care of their patients, but also to give to the community through their roles in improving public health, education, and maintaining important records. Many needed to find other sources of income, as their patients often were unlucky in finding gold, as were most of the physicians. Some suffered exciting lives, including being on a ship full of gold that sunk off the eastern coast of the United States. A number of the physicians worked together to form the Sacramento Society for Medical Improvement, now the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society, the oldest such Society in California.
