‘Second-Best Bed’

Posted on March 12

If you’re a fan of farce, this one’s for you. “Second-Best Bed: A New Comedy about a Very Old Mystery” plays through March 30 at the Woodland Opera House.

The brand-new play by Matthew Abergel is as homegrown as it gets—the playwright, director Bob Cooner and the cast are all locals—and is as side-splitting as a farce aficionado could want. Abergel was appearing in a production of what some consider the best British farce ever written, Michael Frayn’s “Noises Off!”, when he decided to take comedic matters into his own hands.

“I definitely had [‘Noises Off!’] and some of my favorite ‘Frasier’ episodes in mind,” Abergel explains. “I love comedy about smart people doing dumb things and getting themselves into all kinds of trouble.”

“Second-Best Bed” follows the slapstick exploits of protagonist Judy Cobb in her hunt for Shakespeare’s infamous “second-best bed” (the only item the bard left his wife in his will) with the help of her fame-hungry friend Jerry. With door-slamming and kooky characters galore, this new piece is sure to have you howling.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through March 30, with an additional performance on Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m. For tickets and more information, visit secondbestbed.com or call (530) 666-9617. The Woodland Opera House is located at 340 Second St. in Woodland.
