Circus Oz, Australia’s premier modern circus, is rolling into Mondavi Center to dazzle and amuse Sacramento audiences for only two performances. Much like Cirque du Soleil, only predating the French-Canadian extravaganza by six years, Circus Oz is progressive in its rejection of the use of animals and scary Bozo-type clowns in its productions. Instead, they feature only a core group of a dozen or so multi-talented performers who can dazzle audiences with their skills in clowning, acrobatics, aerial work, juggling and more. Circus Oz has been progressive from the start—not only are they animal-free, but their artful shows have tackled issues such as women’s rights, land rights and political asylum. Not only that, but they’ve made sure to have an equal number of men and women on in their cast, and feature performers of all shapes, sizes and ages. But don’t get the false impression that these guys are all serious. Circus Oz brings the wild Australian spirit to the stage with hilarious satire, adorable characters, rock ’n’ roll musicianship and killer clown style. Adults and children alike have been delighted the world over by the charm of this stunning production; catch it while you can before they make their way back to the outback.
