For many people, Dad is their superhero. He’s their biggest fan, the go-to guy when things need fixin’ and simply a great father. How fitting that the inaugural Superheroes 5K takes place on Sunday, June 16, Father’s Day. The twist on this unique event, which you can do as a timed, competitive race or a casual run/jog/walk: You are encouraged to dress up as your favorite superhero. Prizes will be awarded for the most “convincing” costumes. (Participants possessing “superhuman” fundraising efforts (more on that in a moment) and those who can “run faster than a speeding bullet” also are eligible for prizes.) Need some motivation to keep going while on the course? The race mascot, “RunningMan,” will be out in full force, and each time you hit a mile marker, superhero comic book characters will come to life and themed music will play. Lastly, you get to be a superhero by supporting one of 12 charities either by making a donation or raising pledges. That’s super, right?
In addition to the 5K, which starts at 8:30 a.m. and is open to all ages, there’s a ½ mile event for children ages 6 to 10 that starts at 8:10 a.m. and a ¼ mile event for the really little ones ages 5 and younger that starts at 8:05 a.m. Entry fees range from $20 for children 16 and younger to $55 for adults. Or, bump it up to $65 (for both adults and kids) and earn VIP status, which gets you free refreshments in the VIP tent, access to the front of the stage for the post race live music, an exclusive T-shirt and more. But hey, even if you don’t want to do the VIP thing, guess what? You still get a cape! What other 5K have you done recently where you got a cape?
The event starts on the north side of Capitol Mall between 8th and 9th streets in downtown Sacramento and loops around Capitol Park twice. There is a post-race party with entertainment, awards, a beer garden and more. For more information and to register, click here.
By the way, I love the way “Clark Kent/Superman” has his eye on “Flash” in the photo above. What are you going to dress up as?
