No tribute band sounds exactly like the original, but the Rhythm Vandals, who’ll perform Friday, Aug. 16 at Laguna Town Hall in Elk Grove, do a smokin’ job of capturing that sweet, yet fiery, Santana sound. (I’ve seen them several times.) Fronted by lead guitarist Michael Hernandez and lead vocalist/bassist Steve Garland—both who, fittingly enough, grew up in the Bay Area in the late ’60s/early ’70s when Santana rose to fame—the Sacramento-based band also features a host of other talented musicians who rock it out on the drums, timbales, congas and other Latin percussion that give the band its signature sound. Whether you’re an old-school fan from Santana’s early “Black Magic Woman” era or a younger fan who caught on to the band’s charms via more recent hits such as “Smooth,” the Rhythm Vandals should kick up a nice, spicy groove for this night of music under the stars. (Though Laguna Town Hall doesn’t sound like an outdoor space, the show will be performed in the complex’s amphitheater.) So don’t forget your blankie and/or lawn chairs.
