I’ve had the opportunity to hear David Sedaris speak on a couple of occasions. He’s one of my favorite authors to see live. He reads excerpts from the book he’s on tour promoting and does a book signing at the end of the show. Many authors sign books at events; it’s part of the deal. Some just sign their name. A few include a nice, short note. But it’s the book signing that sets Sedaris apart from other authors: He takes the time to chat with every person in line and then, based on the conversation, writes a funny, personalized note. If you ask him to sign a book for a friend, he’ll write them a personalized note as well based on your conversation. Sometimes he’ll include a drawing. I last saw him when he was on tour promoting Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim. Somehow we got on the subject of me being a runner. “Don’t runners poop their pants?” he asked, then proceeded to draw a pair of running pants with poop on them. The message he put in my brother’s book when I saw him in promotion of Me Talk Pretty One Day: “Elena is pregnant!”
This is the type of autograph you can expect from Sedaris, who’s coming to the Crest Theatre Saturday night in promotion of his latest book, Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls. Then again, if you’ve read his books—hilarious collections of essays, many poking fun at his family—this won’t be a big surprise. Tickets to Saturday night’s show are $48.50, but an evening with Sedaris is well worth the ticket price.
I’m fortunate to have seen many authors speak and have gotten many books signed. I have so many books, in fact, that recently I’ve had to start paring them down for space. But I’ll always find room for David Sedaris’ books.
