When I was in college, I took a ballroom dance class for fun—and boy was it. I learned the waltz, swing, fox-trot and tango. The swing was definitely my favorite. It’s been a long time since then, but my hubby and I were recently talking about signing ourselves up for a beginning ballroom class in the area. In doing some research, I found a few local places that can teach us the two-step—and all those other dances! Check ’em out:
Located at 6009 Folsom Blvd. in East Sacramento, The Ballroom of Sacramento offers drop-in classes ($7 each) on Mondays through Thursdays, and for the more committed, has four-punch and 12-punch class cards, which lower the price of group instruction on those days to $6.25 per hour and $5.42 per hour, respectively. For the extremely committed, check out the Key Club Card and Gold Card options. The Ballroom teaches the cha-cha, waltz, fox-trot, tango, two-step, rumba, salsa, East Coast and West Coast swing, club swing and bolero.
The area’s Arthur Murray Dance Studio now has two locations: at 4762-B Manzanita Ave. in Carmichael and 4445 Granite Drive in Rocklin. This studio offers a variety of programs for different types of students: basic introductory, associate bronze, full bronze, silver and, for the competition-bound, a gold program, and teaches rumba, cha-cha, East Coast and West Coast swing, merengue, jive, hustle, Lindy, waltz and many more. Arthur Murray even offers a free introductory class to get you started.
The Del Campo Dance Studio at 2927 Fulton Ave., specializes in salsa, but also teaches waltz, fox-trot, night club two-step, country two-step, hustle, Latin dances and all the swing dances. Group lessons are held Tuesdays through Thursdays, and the type of dance you’re learning dictates which day you’ll learn and practice—check out the calendar.
On a different note, Step One Sacramento Dance and Fitness Academy, located at 1920 T St., offers jazz, hip-hop and tap for adults in addition to multiple fitness classes. A single drop-in class is $16, and an unlimited monthly dance membership is $105. Step One also offers a four-class and eight-class card for $56 and $96, respectively. Other pricing options are available, too.
