When the previews for Avatar first came out, I wasn’t sure what I thought of it. I didn’t run out to see it when it was first released, either. I waited until New Year’s day, and ticket lines and the line to get into the theater were insanely long. So worth the wait, though. I didn’t know what the film was about, walking in, and I hadn't read any review. For the curious, here's the gist: Avatar takes you to Pandora, a place where all things—plants, animals and “the natives,” called the Na'vi—are connected, and the humans aim to destroy this place to mine for unobtainium, a precious metal worth millions of dollars.

To avoid giving a review that sets expectations for those of you who haven’t seen it, I will say only this: It was captivating. Reviews I read after having seen the movie said it was, ultimately, a sci-fi cliché. But even those reviewers loved it. Avatar is worth seeing in the theater, and in 3-D.
