I found myself in El Dorado Hills at lunchtime recently, and made a beeline for the town’s popular Relish Burger Bar. I couldn’t resist ordering the daily chef’s special: a camel burger. Attempting to dispel mental images of cute, furry camel faces and endearing, soft camel humps, I dove into the burger, which was enlivened with a delectable garlic aioli and sauteed mushrooms. Sadly, the meat patty was tough, chewy and virtually tasteless—not worth the courage it took to order way outside the burger box. Next time I’ll stick with the establishment’s fabulous teriyaki burger, loaded with warm grilled pineapple, melted Swiss cheese and a tangy teriyaki sauce; or the equally delicious (and beefless) Ahi tuna burger, which sparkles with the addition of a crunchy daikon slaw and a zesty Thai peanut sauce.
