My kids are shameless fans of The Wienery, East Sac’s beloved bastion of hot dog dining. They recently wheedled me in for lunch, and I was delighted to discover a menu item I hadn’t noticed before on our wiener-eating jaunts: a Reuben sandwich…with an unusual twist. Dark rye bread was loaded with sauerkraut, melted Swiss cheese, thousand-island dressing, and the pièce de résistance – sliced hot dogs instead of the more traditional pastrami or corned beef. Juicy, substantial and humorously awkward to consume, the sandwich was a fun and tasty departure from my usual taco dog.
