I stopped in recently for one of Huong Lan’s delicious báhn mi sandwiches, and – while waiting for my order – worked my way enthusiastically through a pile of the establishment’s banh chuoi, or banana cake. A departure from the American version of “cake,” these subtly sweet, sesame-speckled nibbles - purchased tightly wrapped in cellophane - were tender and slightly gelatinous (like a firm jello), and offered an exotic banana flavor that paired beautifully with their accompanying coconut dipping sauce. Priced at a mere $1.75, the banana cake was an appealing, tropical palate-rouser, readying my taste buds for Huong Lan’s vibrant, crusty, pork-filled sandwich.
