I’m a big barbecue fan, but often leave establishments feeling disappointed with the kitchen’s tough, dry meat items, cloyingly sweet sauces, or lackluster side dishes. So it was with absolute delight that I discovered A & K BBQ, which opened its doors in January 2013 on Stockton Boulevard. The creation of long-time friends Kenny McCoy (pictured) and Anthony Allen, the small, cheery spot is knocking it out of the park with its expertly-smoked meats and fabulous side dishes.
We recently powered our way through platefuls of the duo’s scrumptious, thinly-sliced tri tip, succulent chicken and moist, tender pork ribs.But it was the side dishes that really made my socks go up and down: A & K’s greens, punctuated with bits of smoked turkey, were hearty and delicious, the yams sweet and soft, with a lively whisper of cinnamon and nutmeg. The rustic, comforting mac ‘n cheese was just-cheesy-enough (and gobbled up by my kids in seconds) and the chunky, colorful potato salad – my favorite, favorite side – was dotted with red and green bell peppers and onions, fresh cilantro and parsley.
When you’re feeling carnivorous, take the time to seek out this friendly South Sac dining gem – it’s well worth the visit.
