I’m always on the lookout for a food-friendly red wine, one that complements a wide range of dishes but is also a pleasure to drink by itself. I found an excellent one recently crafted by pretty Villa Toscano winery, located in Plymouth. The 2007 Tre Stellina, a blend of 80 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Primitivo and 5 percent Grenache, is delightfully smooth and supple, with a bright, plummy-raspberry nose and elegant flavors of tart cherry, plum and strawberry. Enlivened with a dose of spiciness and a hint of violet and vanilla, this lovely, nicely structured red would be terrific with tomato-based pasta dishes, grilled tri-tip, barbecued meats, pizza, Italian sausage dishes and well-aged cheeses.
