I was impressed with an ebulliently fruity, wonderfully pleasing 2009 Barbera this week, crafted by Villa Toscano in nearby Plymouth. Soft and silky, the wine also has a bright and lively acidity that makes it a great partner for tomato-based dishes like spaghetti, chili and pizza. It would also pair beautifully with grilled chicken, tri-tip and sausage. Take a big sniff of the garnet-colored wine’s lovely cherry-spicy-blackberry aromas, and savor its plummy, jammy, black currant flavor, embellished with hints of licorice and a touch of spicy black pepper on the finish.
