I had a chance this week to check out The Red Rabbit, which has recently moved into the midtown space last occupied by Red Lotus on J Street. It was packed with chatty twenty-somethings, and the bar area was particularly lively.
The menu is delightfully eclectic, ranging from a lemongrass beef stir fry and a fried egg burger to lamb bocadillas and tempura-battered portobello mushroom frites.
Not-to-miss menu items include the delectable Farm Animal Lollipops – bite-sized meatballs made from beef (atop marinara sauce), lamb (atop a mint chimi churri) and bacon-wrapped chicken (atop beer onion soup aioli); and the kitchen’s fantastic mini fish tacos – crispy-fried cod piled on teeny corn tortillas with cabbage slaw and cotija cheese, served with a palate-singeing habanero hot sauce. And do save room for dessert – the “deconstructed” German chocolate cake is a lot of fun – and very tasty.
