I had an opportunity this week to visit The Porch Restaurant and Bar, located in the space last occupied by Celestin’s Island Eats and Cajun Cuisine. Opened in late December, the new Southern-inspired restaurant is a stunning transformation of the former space – airy, sleek, and contemporary, it features pretty wood floors and tables, flouncy fresh flowers erupting out of jelly jar mugs, and a nattily-attired wait staff.
Signature dishes include buttermilk fried chicken, served with a generous mound of mashed potatoes swathed in sausage-flecked gravy, collard greens and a crusty warm biscuit; and a comforting dish of shrimp and grits, jazzed up with strips of bell pepper and chunks of tasso ham. Don’t miss the irresistible crunchy-juicy fried green tomatoes; and if you’re a cocktail aficionado, you’ll be thrilled with The Porch’s lineup of specialty drinks, including the hand-shaken “Southern Sunday” – composed with bacon-infused Bourbon (really!), pure maple syrup and fresh egg whites.
