Ella Plays Let's Make a Deal: Dinner for Two Plus Wine For $50

Starting next week, Ella Restaurant will offer a $50 dinner-for-two special that includes a bottle of wine—not a bad deal for a restaurant where dinner for two can easily top $100. The deal, which includes two entrees and two sides, will run Mondays through Fridays during the month of February. Next week’s dinner: Bibb salad and a “cocotte” of chicken, winter vegetables and sauce velouté under a puff-pastry crust, served family style, along with a bottle of Tandem 2007 Chardonnay, Sangiacomo Vineyard. The Selland family, which owns Ella, has been running a similar special for the past few months at Selland’s Market-Cafe. (That one costs $25 for two.) Josh Nelson, Ella’s general manager, says the deal appeals to recession-strapped customers because it includes wine. “Other places try to make money by selling you the alcohol,” he says. “With us, it’s basically a giveaway.”
