I was dazzled by a lovely 2011 Semillon recently, crafted by winemaker Mark McKenna at Andis Wines in Amador County. This richly layered, well-structured wine bursts with ripe melon, quince, and peach flavors, and offers a delicate, floral-figgy-honeyed aroma. With enough bright acidity to keep it surprisingly light on the palate, this captivating Semillon is a great alternative to Chardonnay. I would serve this wine with shellfish dishes, Brie and Gorgonzola cheeses, smoked salmon, veal or pork with a cream-based sauce; and roast chicken.
