I had a delightful opportunity recently to visit Chez Daniel, chef Daniel Pont’s new restaurant venture in Folsom. You’ll remember Pont as the one-man-show behind the very popular (and much lauded) Le Bonne Soup in downtown Sacramento, which he sold in April. Pont has re-emerged with an intimate, white tablecloth restaurant that feels worlds away from his very urban, casual 8th street café. Quiet and subdued, with elegant service, the restaurant offers items such as the le mignon de porc au cidre et ses pommes caramélisez (pork tenderloin with apples and cider) and crevettes et noix de Saint Jacques sauce au homard (prawns and scallops with lobster cognac sauce). Our New York steak (l’entrecote de boeuf Lyonnaise), napped in a dreamy red wine reduction was a stunner, and – in case you’re wondering – the French onion soup was as fabulous as ever.
