I dined at Ravenous Cafe in the Pocket area for the first time last night and found out that chef/owner Mark Helms recently sold the restaurant—name and all. Don’t panic, all you foodies—especially Greehaven/Pocket residents who love having an upscale restaurant in the neighborhood. New owner Wade Sawaya isn’t planning any drastic changes to menu’s food or wine list, and Helms himself has been overseeing the restaurant’s change of hands. (When we dined last night, Sawaya was on Day 3.)
Sawaya comes to Sacramento by way of Boulder, Colo., bringing future son-in-law Joe Conrad on board as chef. Both father and son-in-law are certified sommeliers. Sawaya said the restaurant menu will retain the farm-to-table, seasonal influence that made Ravenous so popular, though its Spanish, Italian and French influences will be accompanied by Portuguese; Sawaya is half Portuguese, and was born and raised in Portugal. “I have to put my stamp on it,” he told us.
Ravenous is open for lunch Tuesday–Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and for dinner Tuesday–Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The restaurant is located at 7600 Greenhaven Drive in the Riverlake Village shopping center at the corner of Greenhaven Drive and Pocket Road. Log onto ravenouscafe.com to make a reservation, and be sure to say hello to Wade—he’s congenial and friendly, so it won’t be a problem—and welcome him to the area.
