This first-ever Sacramento event will feature a lighted LED ball dropped from atop a former bank building at 930 K St at one minute before midnight, with newly-elected mayor Kevin Johnson leading the countdown. Other festivities tied to the ball drop will start at 11 p.m. on a stage at 10th and K Streets. In order to accommodate the expected large crowds, 10th Street will be shut down between J and L Streets.
By staging a ball drop, Sacramento would join an elite club of communities that ring in the New Year in this fashion. In addition to New York’s century old Times Square ball drop, a ball drop has been held since 1988 in Buffalo, New York. In Atlanta, Georgia a giant illuminated peach is dropped to signal the beginning of the New Year.
Event highlights include:
- Performance by STOMP of Broadway Sacramento
- Performance by the cast of "Forever Plaid" of the Cosmopolitan Cabaret
- Countdown led by newly-elected mayor Kevin Johnson
- Good Day Sacramento's Mark S. Allen as MC for the event
- LED Light Show - created by Lighting Science, the same company who builds the ball for Times Square in NYC
